By determining the spread of the natural resources in the game you will see what is in demand where. It will show the basics of the economy by stating what will be popular in trade. It will suggest the basis of a culture, because what is readily available will play a big role, as will shortages.

Some examples you may consider:


  1. salt - used to preserve food, vital for survival, and also needed in minor amounts for a healthy diet. Some salts are used in forging iron.
  2. herbs - both for cooking and medicinal use, includes some flowers
  3. honey
  4. spices - a luxury used in cooking. Spices include nutmeg, sugar (made from cane or roots), pepper, cinnamon, saffron, coriander, mustard. Other luxuries to consider are cocoa (to make chocolate), citron fruits, coffee and tabacco.
  5. vegetables - onions, leeks, garlic, beans, potatoes, roots
  6. nuts: almonds, walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts
  7. fruits: strawberries, cherries, apples, pears, cranberries, mulberries, gooseberries, grapes
  8. alcoholic beverages: beer, wine, mead, cider
  9. glass (created by sand)
  10. crystal & gems
  11. metal ore: iron, bronze, copper, silver, gold
  12. from the hunt: game and furs
  13. from herds: diary products, meat, leather, wool
  14. from agriculture: rice, grain (wheat, rye, bayley), hennep etc (for cloth), plants for dye
  15. cloth: linen, velvet, silk etc. This also includes thread.
  16. fresh water
  17. fossil fuels and crude oil
