Monetary System

This section of the development of your setting deals with how transactions are performed in your economy, regardless of its economic system.
[edit] The colour of money
There are different ways of doing transactions.
- transactions trading favours. There is no authority but what the two traders agree upon, directly exchanging goods. Alternatively products and services might be translated into credits or favours.
- transactions using a currency made of a rare commodity like gold or a certain type of shell. There are some standards in place which everyone can check (like a certain weight of coins). The material for the currency can still be found in the wild.
- transactions using a currency that represents a rare commodity and is backed up by government. Thus the currency represents trust in the government. The material the currency is made of is not expensive by itself.
When designing a currency, you can come up with your own mathematical order, or go for the commonly known decimal system. It is likely determined by cultural elements and should likely match for instance with the way time is measured, and distances. This is one of the ways in which you can show consistency to the setting. However, do not just do it on a fancy, but remember easy of moderating.
[edit] Banking
In real life we are used to putting money in a bank and retrieving that money just about everywhere we want, from a cashmachine even. In other settings you might consider the absence of such a convenience and what alternatives might be available.
Money might be safeguarded:
- in a chest
- buried in the ground as treasure
- given to a jeweller
- given to a merchant
Money might be transferred from one location to another:
- using "I owe you" papers
- travelling with hard cash
