Further Development of Setting
From Tazlure Gaming System Wiki
When you launch a game, you will run into the fact that your community will want to add things to your setting and aid you with its further development. There are three possible ways you can react to that.
[edit] No, Absolutely Not
If this is setting is your baby it may be very difficult for you to allow hands to touch it, changing your vision beyond what is recognizable. The bonus of keeping the entire development in your own hands is that can easily keep the consistency of the original creation in the setting and preserve your own mark on the whole.
However the consequence also is that the full burden of updating will fall upon yourself. New areas, new locations, write ups for history etc. This in addition to your administrative burden.
[edit] Sure, Go Right Ahead
A free caring spirit might decide that moderators and players should do what sounds fun and give the go ahead to all suggested changes and new additions. It is sure to generate a very diverse amount of creativity.
However, there is an immediate threat to Continuity of Content. If development is no longer linked to the rest of the setting, is in contradiction to it, or adds so many new themes that the original intent becomes diluted it will lower the experience people have with the setting. Examples include players that want to introduce furries, vampires and other concepts of other games. In a worst case scenario players and mods will rewrite history as you set it, so that you no longer recognize your original creation.
[edit] The Golden Way of Compromise
You can combine the best of both worlds by setting standards along which you want future development to run.
Things to include are:
- What is the game system? Don't just refer to this wiki, but state what specific adaptations you've made for your own game. What does it mean for development?
- What is fundamental to the atmosphere of the setting? What are the core principles?
- What are elements that you simply do not want to see in your setting and why?
- Along what lines should new additions to the setting be designed?
- What is the approval process? Is there a certain head of development? Do you want to approve submissions? Does it fall to a group?
