Astronomy

Even if you are not making a sci fi setting, or even if it is a very primitive setting, you will still need to divine a few things about the universe that surrounds your planet.

[edit] The Moon and the Sun

See also Moons

If you go with a "just like Earth" principle there is only one moon and one sun. You might want to vary that. Why not two suns revolving around each other? Why not three moons? Ask yourself though if that is necessary for your setting. What does it add to the stories you have in mind? Anything that distracts instead of adds should be kept out.

[edit] The Stars Above

Astronomy is the scientific study of matter in outer space, especially the positions, dimensions, distribution, motion, composition, energy, and evolution of celestial bodies and phenomena. Astronomy for many reasons, varies from place to place. The most obvious reason being: the sky is different in different parts of the world. Or, at least, different things can be viewed. Because of this, as well as due to the scientific advances (or lack there of) of the different peoples, one cannot expect everyone to have the same knowledge.

Constellations will be used to navigate by, as well as give rise to myths. They are therefore tied to religion and mythology. By defining constellations before hand you establish important lore and lexicon to use in plotlines. It is a potent addition to a setting.

[edit] Suggested Lay Out

This layout can be used if it is pre-stellar setting. Naturally if you are running something a little more advanced you will want more details about the various solar systems etc.

  • Common Name(s):
  • Description:
  • Location:
  • Folklore/Mythology:

Example: Diamond Lady

  • Common Name(s): Diamond in the Rough, Gem of the Heavens
  • Description: A constellation at the northern pole of Tazlure in the shape of a diamond (more specifically, a kite, with two smaller sides opposite of two longer ones) in which the Guide Star is located at the joining position of the two smaller sides.
  • Location: Visible in the Seven Isles and the Western Kingdom.
  • Folklore/Mythology: Sailors use it to navigate by. The Diamond Lady is said to be a fae that guides the ships safely home. What you see is the glitter of her gigantic diamond luring sailors, pirates, adventurers and thieves to her hidden palace filled with great treasures.

[edit] Astrology

Astrology is the study of planets and human behaviour, or in other words the study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural occurrences and human affairs. It may not play a part in your setting, or it could give a little extra bounce to it. It gives deeper meaning to the use of colours, of names of the month, names of ships, things people want to associate with etc.
